1. Check the file's metadata first

Most smartphone and camera photos embed GPS coordinates directly into the image file, in a format called EXIF data. This happens automatically when your phone's location services are on at the moment you take the picture. It's the single most reliable way to find a photo's location, because it's not a guess — it's the exact coordinates your device recorded.

The catch: this metadata is fragile. It's often stripped out when you screenshot an image, download it from social media, or send it through certain messaging apps that compress photos. So it works great for photos straight from your own camera roll, and less often for images you've found elsewhere online.

2. Read the visual clues

When metadata isn't available, the next best approach is old-fashioned detective work — except now, AI vision models can do a lot of this automatically. Architecture style, language on signage, license plates, vegetation, and even the angle of shadows can narrow down a location dramatically.

This is where visual analysis shines for well-known places: famous landmarks, distinctive skylines, recognizable buildings. It struggles more with generic scenes — a stretch of highway or an ordinary office building look similar everywhere.

3. Combine both

The most reliable systems don't pick one method — they check the metadata first, since it's exact and free, and only fall back to visual analysis when metadata is missing.
