You'd think the more famous a landmark, the easier it is to identify from a photo. Often that's true — but not always. Here are a few categories of places that regularly trip up both people and AI vision tools.
1. Landmarks shot from unusual angles
The Eiffel Tower, seen head-on from the Trocadéro, is instantly recognizable. The same tower, photographed from directly underneath looking straight up through the ironwork, is a completely different visual puzzle. Most recognition systems — human or AI — are trained on the "iconic" angle, and struggle more with anything else.
2. Landmarks with a person or object dominating the frame
A portrait shot with a landmark as backdrop is common — and it's genuinely harder to identify than a clean shot of the same place. When a person, object, or foreground element takes up most of the frame, there's simply less of the landmark visible to work with.
3. Near-identical sibling buildings
Some landmarks have close visual cousins elsewhere in the world. Colonial-era clock towers, for instance, were often built from similar blueprints across different former colonies — a photo of one can easily be mistaken for another without additional context.
4. Landmarks under renovation or scaffolding
A famous building partially wrapped in scaffolding, or missing a section that's normally part of its silhouette, throws off recognition significantly — even though it's the exact same place.
5. Interior shots
A photo taken inside a cathedral, museum, or historic building often gives far fewer external cues than an exterior shot. Interiors can look strikingly similar across buildings of the same era and architectural style.
