Open any photo straight from your phone and, hidden inside the file, there's a small block of data most people never see: EXIF metadata. It's not part of the image itself — it's more like a label stuck to the back of a printed photograph, except this one is written automatically, by machine.
What's actually in there
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) data typically includes:
- Camera or phone model
- Date and time the photo was taken
- Camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO)
- Orientation
- And, if location services were enabled: GPS coordinates, accurate to a few meters
That last one is the part most people don't think about. If your phone's location was on when you took a photo, the exact spot — latitude and longitude — is very likely baked into the file.
Why this matters
This is genuinely useful when it's your photo and you want to remember where you took it. It's less comfortable when you realize that same data travels with the file if you send it to someone, post it somewhere that doesn't strip it, or upload it to a service that reads it.
Most major social platforms strip EXIF data automatically before displaying images — which is part of why reverse-searching a photo from Instagram or X rarely turns up GPS coordinates directly. But plenty of other channels (email, some messaging apps, direct file transfers) leave it intact.
How to check your own photos
You don't need special software. Any photo location tool that reads EXIF data — including LocationFindr — will tell you immediately whether a given photo has embedded coordinates. It's a good way to get a sense of which of your own photos are quietly carrying their location with them, and which aren't.
